Sarlkofel
Description
The summit cross of the mighty Sarlkofel can be seen from Dobbiaco high above the village - the destination of today's tour. Initially you cycle along the cycle paths towards Villabassa/Niederdorf, but then keep left and climb up the Grautal valley to the Putz Alm. This section is on a gravel road, but after the alpine pasture, you're done with leisurely cycling. Alternating between carrying and pushing, the route now climbs up to the Sarlsattel. The route rides along an alpine path, which is well developed but still requires solid surefootedness. The path is not dangerous but it is strenuous: 480 meters of altitude are mastered on foot. At the top of the saddle, a panorama opens up that is second to none: At your feet lies the gentle Sarl plateau with lush meadows and dark patches of forest, with the rocky Dürrenstein towering into the sky behind you. The view from here is a picture postcard subject that couldn't be better. The whole thing is topped by the view from the Sarlkofel summit. Leave the bike at the saddle and tackle the easily accessible hiking trail up to the summit (150 meters in altitude) on foot. From the top, you can now also see Dobbiaco, from where we looked up in the opposite direction early in the morning.
After returning to the Sarlsattel, the descent is on the agenda. A fun single trail leads along the ridge through the pastureland until it climbs again just before the Flodigen saddle. The bike has to be pushed again for almost 100 vertical meters to reach the final culmination point. Now you are right next to the mighty rock faces of the Dürrenstein - fantastic! Fantastic is also the adjective for the singletrail descent. The 33er trail rides smoothly through the Flodige Valley until it meets the trail from the Flodigealm further down. Now it gets rougher and steeper, but experienced riders will also master this section without any problems. Further down, it finally becomes smoother again and you reach the military cemetery in the Höhlenstein valley. You then cycle along the cycle route back to Dobbiaco. Conclusion: An exceptionally great tour for those who like to combine single trails with nature experiences and are not too shy to make the ascent on foot.

We rode the tour today. As recommended by Phil, we continued straight ahead at km 3.8. Unfortunately, there is currently woodwork going on which will probably take a few more weeks. We have to ride a detour on the "hiking trail", which has very steep and long ramps.
Fortunately, the Put Alm offers delicious dumplings and Kaiserschmarren for refreshment.
At the Alm, you can follow the new path to the left and leave it again at the second point where it crosses the original route. This saves you the first few meters of pushing thanks to the pleasant gradient.
The ascent to the Sarlkofel is worthwhile as described. The descent is a little rough at the beginning to and over the mountain pasture. But after the last few meters of pushing, there is a fun flowing trail until the final passage. You can still ride it at the beginning. In the middle, depending on your ability and courage, you can push a little in the scree and at the end you can sit up again.
In summary, a rewarding tour with a great panorama of the Dolomites and fun trails in the S1-S3 range.
At km 4, the GPX trail leads unnecessarily steeply up through the forest and then down again on a gravel road. It is better to stay on the east side of the stream at km 3.8.
Anyone vacationing in this region should treat themselves to at least one night in a Skyview Chalet at the campsite on Lake Dobbiaco. Not cheap, but well worth the money.
