Grosser Rosskopf
Description
The tour starts in Schmieden in the municipality of Prags, where the valley divides in the direction of Pragser Wildsee and up to Plätzwiese. From Schmieden, follow the marked mountain bike route on a gravel road along the Altpragser Tal valley towards the Plätzwiesensattel saddle. Before the Alpengasthof Brückele, turn right and climb up towards the Rossalm. The gravel road is extremely steep and with the lowest gear ratio you fight your way up to the Rossalmhütte (Baita del Cavallo) at 2164 meters above sea level. You should definitely make a stop at the Rossalm hut and treat yourself to some refreshments, as this is probably the most rustic hut host in the entire Dolomites and wonderful delicacies await you here. Strengthened, you can pedal or, depending on your strength reserves, push your way up to the Großer Jaufen. The 28a trail is classified as S0 to S1 at the top. From the saddle itself to the Grosser Rosskopf, you roll down the 28a into the Grosser Rosstal a little before taking the bike on your shoulder and carrying it up to the summit of the Grosser Rosskopf. If you are on an e-mountain bike, you should ideally leave the bike here and tackle the ascent and descent to the summit on foot. The summit offers an incredible panorama and it is hard to believe that a few kilometers to the left and right (Pragser Wildsee, Plätzwiese) a tourist stronghold has formed that is second to none. Up here, peace and relaxation prevail most of the time.
The descent follows the 28er trail again, changing to the 29er trail and descending the Rossalpetour. A single trail with a difficulty of S1 to S2 winds its way to the Postmeisteralm. From the Postmeisteralm, it then takes on the character of the Dolomites. A steep serpentine trail with countless hairpin bends at S3 level must be "conquered". This is how you reach the war memorial at Alpengasthof Brückele on the valley floor. On the descent, you should be aware that it is better to push the bike for safety reasons in some exposed sections. From the Alpengasthof Brückele, you roll along the ascent route back to Schmieden with a few shorter singletrail detours. Conclusion: an amazing tour between tourist magnet and solitude that couldn't be more different. The view of the Rote Wand or Kleine Gaisl and the extreme rockfall with a volume of around 1.6 million m³ makes the area extremely interesting from a scenic point of view.Map & GPX-Track

We rode this tour on 02-Aug-2023. Great tour, although we were denied the view at the summit due to fog. The gravel road to the Rossalmhütte is mostly a brutal climb. There were many hikers on the road up to the hut, most of whom continued on towards Pragster Wildsee. After the Rossalmhütte and the turn-off towards Grosser Rosskopf, we were on our own. On the way back, we chose the alternative descent on trail no. 30. This follows a stream into a gorge and is a very pleasant, not too difficult trail all the way down. We didn't meet a soul on the entire descent, but were able to observe chamois in the rocks above us. At the end of the trail, just before the start of the steep gravel road, you come back to the access road. I don't know the original descent, but can recommend my variant to those who want to enjoy a first-class trail without S3 hairpin bends.
