Monte Campo Cavallo (Roßkopf)

The Großer Rosskopf (Monte Campo Cavallo) is a little-known mountain between the Altpragsertal valley and the Pragser Wildsee lake and offers a clever combination of breathtaking panoramic views, trail sections and sightseeing in its highest form.

Description

The tour starts in Schmieden in the municipality of Prags, where the valley divides in the direction of Pragser Wildsee and up to Plätzwiese. From Schmieden, follow the marked mountain bike route on a gravel road along the Altpragser Tal valley towards the Plätzwiesensattel saddle. Before the Alpengasthof Brückele, turn right and climb up towards the Rossalmhütte. The gravel road is extremely steep and with the lowest gear ratio you fight your way up to the Rossalmhütte (Baita del Cavallo) at 2164 meters above sea level. You should definitely make a stop at the Rossalm hut and treat yourself to some refreshments, as the most rustic innkeeper in the entire Dolomites and wonderful delicacies await you here. Strengthened, you pedal or, depending on your strength reserves, push your way up to the Großer Jaufen (Giavo Grande). The 28A trail is classified as S0 to S1 at the top. From the saddle itself to the Grosser Rosskopf, you roll down the 28A trail into the Grosser Rosstal valley before taking the bike on your shoulder and carrying it up to the summit of the Grosser Rosskopf. If you are on an e-mountain bike, you should ideally leave the bike here and tackle the ascent and descent to the summit on foot. The summit offers an incredible panorama and it is hard to believe that a few kilometers to the left and right (Pragser Wildsee, Plätzwiese) a tourist stronghold has formed that is second to none. Up here, peace and relaxation prevail most of the time.

The descent again follows the 28er trail towards Walsche Platz up to the saddle at 2273 meters above sea level. The entire section can be classified between S1 and S2. The descent from the summit is particularly panoramic. From the Rossalmhütte, or rather from the saddle, you take the 4-person route. Here the descent is at S2 level, but in places at S3 level, especially in the middle and lower sections, and is quite flowy down to the world-famous Pragser Wildsee lake. A natural jewel in the middle of the Dolomites. Not one of the most frequented mountain lakes in the Alps. However, this is a leisurely ride along the southern shore, so you have relatively few points of contact with tourists. The route then continues on a flow trail in combination with side roads back to the starting point in Schmieden.
