Rote Wand

The Rote Wand (2818 meters above sea level) is a relatively unknown summit between the Antholzer and Gsieser valleys in the Pustertal valley. The high alpine tour near the state border with Austria offers Western Alps flair and many "lost places".

Description

The starting point for this long and alpine tour is Olang or Welsberg at the entrance to the Gsiesertal valley. Follow the small roads to St. Martin in the municipality of Gsies. From here, turn left and follow the cycle path through the Karbachtal valley until just before the Kapaire Alm. The moderately steep path ends here and the bike is placed on the shoulder. Carrying and pushing, it is transported along the 7-seater trail up to the Rote Wand (Croda Rossa) at 2818 meters above sea level. In the upper section just before the Croda Rossa, the path is relatively difficult to recognize, but the markings on the rocks provide good orientation. Once you reach the Rote Wand, you think you are in the Western Alps. To the north, the summits of the main Austrian Alpine ridge stretch as far as the Venediger Group. Towards the south, you have a view of the Dolomites - a contrast that could not be more pronounced.

You just have to be careful that you don't go round in circles and miss the descent because of all the changing views. This continues unabated on the 7er trail to the Staller Sattel. The path is alpine in the upper section and can be classified as S2 to S3 in terms of difficulty and remains so until you reach the saddle. In the connection and alternative Hexenscharte/Forcella Di M. Regola, the trail follows a Vallo Alpino path and shows its teeth in places due to eroded sections, but is completely rideable. The panoramic views are undiminished and are simply amazing, circling along above the tree line as far as the Staller Sattel. The trail continues to the Antholzer See lake and then along the Seeweg trail and later the Franzosensteig trail along the entire Antholzer Tal valley to the Antholzer Bach stream. From there, the trail turns into a cycle path and you roll out comfortably to Valdaora/Olang. In Olang itself, you can enjoy the peace and quiet in the middle of the Pustertal valley and reflect on the day over a nice coffee. You can then return to Monguelfo on your own on the cycle path or by train in the direction of Dobbiaco.
