Somamunt – Pragser Wildsee

Somamunt

The Kreuzjoch, called "Somamunt" in Ladin, is an equally unknown and rewarding passage from the Gadertal valley to the Pragser Wildsee lake. This fantastic tour takes you deep into the heart of the Pale Mountains!

Description

Lake Braies is a hit with Instagrammers from all over the world. But what no selfie star knows is that the mystical mountain lake in the Dolomites is the entrance to the underworld. At least according to legend. According to this legend, you can paddle into the subterranean parts of the Fanes kingdom by boat. Mountain bikers prefer to explore the legendary realm above ground. And have the unique opportunity to pay a visit to the mystical Lake Braies through the back door - via a forgotten but all the more interesting passage. To reach the legendary, secret pass called "Somamunt", you first have to hover over the 2273-metre-high Kronplatz of Dolomite Queen Dolasilla - but in a completely unspeakable way by cable car from Gassl (1170m) near Olang. Down to the Furkelsattel (1745m), you whizz southwards on the fast steep bends of the built "Furcia Trail" to tackle the steep ascent to the "Kreuzjoch" (2283m), also known as Somamunt, just below the saddle. On the old, steep road through the lonely Val Fojedora, many people wish they had an e-bike... Once at the top, it immediately becomes clear why the "Pale Mountains" are called that: a Tolkien-like primeval landscape wherever you look. Ship ahead: the mighty, 2810-metre-high Seekofel. This impossibly chunky block, which towers almost one and a half kilometers above the lake, is called "Sass dla Porta" in Ladin. Because the gateway to the underworld lies directly below the mountain. At the southern end of Lake Braies. If you want to get down there, you have to more than earn your Insta-picture. The descent only briefly shows its wide, tame side up to the Hochalmhütten (2114m). This is where the downhill battle begins. Riding technique experts will love it, normal riders will descend at the S3 sections from time to time. But soon you are standing on the shores of the fabulous Pragser Wildsee lake. Marvel at all the Instagram hunters from all over the world - and scan the southern shore of the lake with your eyes. Where might it be hiding, the entrance to the underworld?

Just awesome—a cool ride, mountain biking at its best!

The ascent is really very steep, the start of the tour involves some road descents, which can at least be shortened a little via a short carry/push section. The descent from the alpine pasture/hut is absolutely interesting, from the lake only gravel and cycle paths. All in all, a half road bike/gravel tour with swimming fun and certainly crowds of people during the day.

Beware, the ascent to the Kreuzjoch is very steep. The final section in particular is merciless; few people ride here without e-assistance. And the downhill trail after the Üces de Fojedöra (with the friendly hosts) is very demanding, almost continuously S3 with S4 sections in places. A great route in terms of scenery.
