Schächental

Many people know the Schächental valley from passing through it on the way to the Klausen Pass. High above the valley floor, there are paths that are ideal for mountain bike routes. Even less experienced riders will get their money's worth here.

Description

The tour ideally starts in Bürglen, which is just a stone's throw from Altdorf. Here you take the cable car and ride up to Biel far above the Schächental valley. Continue on a small road via Feldmis to Alp Chummwasen and from there up to Heidmannegg and finally to the Klausen Pass. Up to the Klausen Pass, the route is signposted as "Schächental Bike" (Route 416). At the top of the pass, you change sides of the valley for the return journey. This is technically more demanding and more singletrail-heavy. The first part rides along an alpine road to Alp Chammli, but a little later the route turns into a singletrail. You later reach Alp Wannelen and then the Brunni valley. An alpine path rides from here to Unterschächen. The pass road and individual shortcuts (follow the hiking trail markings) take you to Spirigen and finally back to Bürglen.

As you often have to carry the bike on this tour on sloping terrain, it is completely unsuitable or even dangerous if you do it on an e-bike. In addition, the riding technique is rated far too low with 3 grades!

I did the tour in the Postauto-Tour variant, i.e. starting approximately in the middle from the top of the Klausen Pass. Despite the wonderful Sunday weather, bike transportation was very easy, even without a reservation. The route is scenic and varied, the paths are peppered with difficult passages. Watch out for the hairpin bends after the top of the pass: you can only see how exposed the path is from below...

Fitness has been confused with riding technique!

I have also ridden other wonderful tours in the Schächental and Klausen Pass area.
e.g. from Glarus Süd on the Höhenweg to Braunwald and then on the Höhenweg to Urnerboden. On the pass road up to Klausenpasshöhe and shortly afterwards on the Schächentaler Höhenweg to Eggberge and down to Flüelen. The panorama on this tour is uniquely beautiful. I got to see a lot of the Tödi, which was great for me as a Grisons native, as you can hardly see the Tödi from so close in Graubünden, and the Tödi is an important mountain in the Grisons Oberland, after which many a restaurant is named. The Tödi view was really something special for me as a Grisons native. I also recorded the tour on video and you can watch it on youtube.

I once did another tour from Eggbergen on the Schächentaler Höhenweg to the Kinzig Pass on the newly built Natur Passtrasse. After the pass, I rode up the Chinzig Culm, the old pass road where General Suworow came over with his army of 20,000 men. Then I rode on the alpine roads down to Muatathal. It was an interesting, easy tour for e-mountain bikers and is highly recommended for those who want to take it easy. I also recorded this tour up to the top of the Kinzig Pass and it is available on youtube: https://youtu.be/QsxHDE0ElW0

On August 7th we rode the Schächental tour. In my opinion, the riding technique rating is too low. There are extremely tight serpentines to negotiate in steep terrain. A safe rear wheel offset is essential to be able to ride the difficult sections. Furthermore, certain passages are extremely exposed, which means you have to push your bike.
