Passo del Tonale

The mountain trail on the Passo Tonale down into the Val di Sole is one of the most famous bike routes in the region. The ascent on the old pass road provides the pleasant gradient, then there is a first-class mix of single trails and gravel roads including trail fireworks at the end.

Description

The starting point is the village of Pizzano in the municipality of Vermiglio in the uppermost part of the Val di Sole. Here you roll up the 680 vertical meters to Passo del Tonale on the former pass road. The ascent is not quite over yet, the section up to Forte Saccarana and into Val Strino follows. This is where the singletrail fun begins, starting with the descent down to Malga Strino. Here you switch to the gravel road and head towards Val Verniana. The slightly ascending path later turns into a trail, leads down to Malga Varniana and finally back up to Malga Saviana - the starting point of the long and fun trail descent down to Fraviano.

Vermiglio is the starting point of the tour to the Tonale Pass, which you conquer on the old pass road away from traffic. Up to the pass, you largely follow the signs; on the way back from the pass, the tour can be enriched with trails that require a short push, depending on your ability. The ascent to the old Fort Zaccharone is fantastic and non-technical, then pure trail fun begins. The tour leads out of the valley via several mountain pastures and finally back to the village of Vermiglio on a steep trail with hardly any traffic.
