Passo dei Contrabbandieri

Passo dei Contrabbandieri (Ponte di Legno)

The Passo dei Contrabbandieri is one of these trail wonders in Trentino. Combined with the trail from the Rifugio Buzzi, the loop is a first-class and impressive fun ride.

Description

The tour starts in a very relaxed manner with the mountain railroad from Ponte di Legno up to the Tonale Pass, followed by the chairlift to Malga Valbiolo. But then the leisurely pace is over: first a super steep gravel road, then shouldering the bike and continuing on an alpine trail to the Passo dei Contrabbandieri. Around 400 vertical meters are overcome in this way.

On the back of the pass, the descent begins. The start is S4 level in exposed terrain and requires full concentration - it is better to walk a few meters here. After that, the path becomes much smoother and rides straight as an arrow to the Rifugio Bozzi. It's worth stopping for a bite to eat, even if the route branches off into an endlessly long mountain trail just below the hut.

This section is an absolute highlight: the trail hugs the mountain flank in a flowing and playful manner, with short counter-climbs to be mastered here and there. Finally, you reach the ridge high above Ponte di Legno. From here, a long, winding and fun descent begins down to the Tonale Pass road. On the opposite side of the road, there are trails specially designed for mountain bikers that lead down to the valley floor near Ponte di Legno.

Note: If you want to complete the ascent under your own steam, ideally choose the asphalt road via Pozzi to Case di Viso and then continue climbing on the gravel road to Rifugio Bozzi. See the route Forcella di Montozzo.
