Malga Kraun

Those who tackle the Malga Kraun north of Trento must expect a tough uphill and a very technical descent - but will be rewarded with a great mountain panorama and solitude on the tour.

Description

The tour starts in Mezzocorona, below Monte Mezzocorona and the impressive cable car. It should be noted right at the start that the ascent can be massively shortened by using the cable car. This cable car is one of the steepest in Europe and offers a breathtaking mountain backdrop. For all those who want to climb the mountain using their own muscle power, the trail first leads north along the Torrente Noce. You then switch to a concrete ramp that is a real challenge. With gradients of up to 40%, the choice of gear is crucial and there is no mercy for the calves. The view is impressive, especially in the section with paving, but there is little air and energy left to really enjoy it. In the Ponte Sospeso area, the gradient flattens out a little before you finally reach Monte di Mezzocorona. The view here is magnificent, and the newly built platform allows you to enjoy it even better. Continue north along the Strada forestale until you reach Malga Kraun.

The Malga offers traditional food and is an ideal rest stop before the descent begins, which is just as tough as the uphill. There is hardly any warm-up phase - it's straight down to business. The trail rides through beech forests and ranges between difficulty levels S3 and S4. Full concentration, perfect weight distribution and a good line of sight are essential on the typical limestone ground, roots and narrow dirt tracks. The last section of the descent leads past Cascata Zambel, where the difficulty drops to S3 and later S2. Finally, you reach Roveré della Luna and ride back to Mezzocorona on main and secondary roads through vineyards.
