Croce di Fai – Zambana Vecchia
Description
Start in Mezzolombardo a little north of Trento. The pass road leads steadily uphill on asphalt to Passo Santel. It should be noted that there is heavy traffic, especially in the summer months and at weekends. After the first hill, the ascent to Fai della Paganella is relatively moderate and continues on forest and meadow paths past Cortalta towards the Santel cable car and Passo Santel. Here you then take a relatively sharp turn onto a forest path and pedal steadily uphill for a long time, sometimes with a moderate gradient. In the upper section, you then cross the mountain ridge below Monte Fausior before finally reaching the summit cross of Croce di Fai. A fabulous panorama opens up and, with good visibility and dry air, the view here is indescribable.
The descent initially follows a relatively unspectacular gravel road, then follows an old historical mule track on difficulty S1 to S3 in places to Fai della Paganella. Some parts are a little exposed here, but overall everything is easy to ride. After Fai della Paganella, get ready for the descent towards Rio della Palú. Initially, the descent is on difficulty S1/S2, after which you have the option of taking the Direttissima trail at the old lift stations and rejoining the trail at the El Cason hut. It should be noted here, however, that this has a difficulty of S4 in places. It is therefore advisable to take the gravel road for a short time and join a fantastic single trail at the El Cason hut. However, the trail has it all. As the level of difficulty increases, the trail reaches S3 in the area of the church and demands full concentration. In Zambana Vecchia, you reach the Adige Valley and pedal back towards Torrente Noce to Mezzolombardo in a relaxed manner. The route continues along idyllic forest and meadow paths through the La Rupe biotope before returning to the starting point.

It is inexplicable to me how a relatively uninteresting trail can be described in such an inviting way. Unfortunately, I have often noticed that Depauli's descriptions often have little to do with reality.
