Valle Cairasca

Singletrail Action

At the southern foot of the Simplon Pass lies the village of Varzo with the Valle Cairasca - a little gem when it comes to single trails! The circular tour combines some of the most fun trails and integrates the chairlift from San Domenico up to Alpe Ciamporino. The route is perfectly feasible from Brig with the short train ride through the Simplon tunnel.

Description

Varzo train station is the starting point for the tour up to Valle Cairasca. You can reach Varzo by train from Brig through the Simplon tunnel in just 19 minutes. From Varzo, there is a pleasant asphalt ascent to the church of Tasquera, which can be seen from afar. After the church, there is another short climb until the trail into the Valle Cairasca begins just above the village. This super trail rides gently up and down the steep western flank of Monte Teggiole and is an extremely attractive connection to Ponte Campo at the very back of Valle Cairasca. From here, the route climbs a little further on an asphalt road to San Domenico, where you change to the chairlift and are shuttled the 470 meters up to Alpe Ciamporino. Now it's time for the second part of the tour - the extremely fun and varied return trip back to Varzo. Follow the path to Alp Moiera, which descends gently through the steep terrain. After Moiera, it's time to unpack all your riding technique for a short stretch. The first trail section is steep and interspersed with hairpin bends, but later becomes faster and smoother. Between Torba and Maulone, the trail is first-class fun, then you roll downhill a little on the ascent route before heading right into the brilliant trail finish down to Varzo. Conclusion at Varzo station: The route is a real highlight in the otherwise rather rough area of Domodossola.

Note: The chairlift in San Domenico is in operation from the beginning of June to the beginning of September (sandobikepark.com). If you tackle the tour outside of the operating hours of the chairlift, you can either ride up to Alpe Ciamporino under your own steam or take the path from the village over to Torba and get back to the original route this way.
