Stockalperweg (Simplon)

The Simplon Pass is known for the Stockalper Trail, but there are wonderful alternatives heading south. The Simplon South Side Tour combines some of these trails and rides down to Iselle. You can then return to Brig in just a few minutes by train through the Simplon tunnel.

Description

The starting point of the Simplon South Side Tour is Brig train station, where you first get on the Postauto-Tour bus and ride up to the Simplon Pass. At the top of the pass, you switch to the saddle and take the first section of the signposted and now legendary Stockalperweg towards Simplon village. At Egga, just before the village of Simplon, you leave the Stockalperweg and head uphill to the avalanche barriers below the Glatthorn. This ascent initially rides along asphalt roads, then further up along gravel paths. In this way, 600 vertical meters with a pleasant gradient are overcome until the downhill trail finally begins below the avalanche barriers. This is still challenging at first, but then becomes an exceptionally fun super trail from the Hobielestafel. Later, you follow the Chrummbacheri water pipe for a short stretch until you reach the next trail highlight at Heji: the descent to Gabi. Here you meet up with the Stockalperweg again, follow it through the Gondo Gorge and finally reach Gondo. For the final section, you now have to roll down the main road for around four kilometers to Iselle, where you board the train and return to the starting point in Brig in just 17 minutes.

Note: There is a promising high-level trail from the Simplon Pass that rides directly to the avalanche barriers below the Glatthorn. However, this path is very rocky and not suitable for mountain bikers.

I agree with Marus' last comment. Gabi up to Gondo there is still the former military gun tunnel to cross, illuminated. The valley becomes very narrow and shady with high, steep rock faces. Iselle Brig with BLS in 17min.
We waited for the connection with a coffee in San Marco Gondo and rolled to Iselle-Trasquera in ~10min

A very rewarding and fun tour in a beautiful landscape and on great trails. Instead of going to Gondo, you can also ride from Gabi Simplon back to Simplon Pass by post bus or by bike (via the old pass road) and from there take the north side to Brig.
