Stalden Rundtour

Trail nach Jungen (Mattertal)

At the entrance to the Matter and Saas valleys lie some of the most attractive single trails in Valais. On the Stalden circular tour, these are brought together to form a spectacular route.

Description

In Visp, you hang your bike on the rear rack of the Postbus and ride up to Moosalp. The route starts right at the top of the pass, initially on a wide path that soon turns into a single trail. On this you roll to Lägeralp and finally to Emdbach. Here you have to carry your bike 200 meters uphill. You reach a ledge and this is where the thrills begin. The trail hugs the steep mountain flank here. It is easy to ride in sections, but falls are to be avoided here! However, there are also rope-secured sections to master time and again. To be on the safe side, push your bike here. The trail continues in this way to the lake above Jungen.

The village of Jungen is the starting point of the long descent into the Mattertal valley, which is technical at first, then increasingly flowy, but always steep. The path leads to St. Niklaus, from where you climb up to Grächen on the road. The post bus is also an advantage here. From Grächen you roll to Bärgji and on to the Hohtschugge inn. To get to the descent, you have to push your bike over the terrace, the path starts just behind it. It leads steeply towards Stalden, but becomes increasingly smooth and moderate. Eventually you reach Stalden, where you take the gondola to Gspon. The final fireworks display over the Gibidumpass awaits. To get there, you initially climb up a section of the alpine road, but soon find yourself on a singletrail and follow it to the Gibidumpass. A detour to the lake is in order before you take the trail down to Giw (chairlift mountain station), continue downhill on a forest trail and then reach the ridge high above Visp on a Suonen trail. You follow this ridge, then take the singletrail to Hotee and curve down to Visp. This final section is one of the best the region has to offer!

Note: The Moosalp-Jungen route leads through very steep terrain and is only recommended for experienced mountain bikers with a head for heights. Less experienced riders should take the direct descent to Kalpetran.

Some trails in the region are currently still not rideable. There are many trees lying across and there is also damage to the trail due to trees being torn out.

Moosalp to Obriäbi on the Jungu Höhenweg is not rideable. From Obriäbi to Sankt Niklaus, the trail is rideable again. Hohtschugge to Stalden is also rideable (still minor damage).
The trail from Giw to Visp is not yet clear in places - unfortunately there is little flow on the trail (broken-off sections).
Nevertheless, a lot has already been repaired. Many thanks for the good work!

Super tour. 0900, start Moosalp. No mistakes allowed before Jungu, high risk of falling. Some places are better not ridden. Jungu DH technical, steep and awesome ;-) Needed 2h40 to St.Niklaus. Postbus to Grächen transported us despite over-optimistic reservation. DH to Stalden again technical, steep & ....
Gibidumpass to Visp via Giw Enduro 548 fits perfectly, even if not exactly on the ride GPS track.

Very nice tour. We rode the less exposed variant Moosalp Emd Kalpetran St. Niklaus and from there on the original route.

very cool round trip in the upper Valais

On the descent from Moosalp to St Niklaus there has been a large rockfall for about 2 days. It is possible to get through but the bike has to be carried. there is also a large snowfield which has to be crossed over a river and there is a risk of collapse. both places are not completely safe but doable. this means that a lot more time is needed, we were only able to do the tour as far as Stalden within one day (10:00 from Moosalp, arrival Stalden approx. 17:00, average biker), we had to skip Gspon.

further note: the tour is quite strenuous and for the first 2 parts up to Stalden we think it does not deserve a 6 star overall rating but at most 4. probably the last part is the top part.

The Stalden - Gspon aerial cableway is out of service until the end of 2018 due to renovation work.

Super cool tour, with technical and flowy sections.
Part of the route from Moosalp to Jungen is a danger of falling. On the left-hand side, there is a vertical drop of several hundred meters.
I am a tour guide and DH rider. Please don't show any false pride. People often like to ride further to the right out of respect, if branches or rocks stick out and you get caught on the handlebars, you tip over the edge of the rock to the left and into the depths. If you want to ride for a long time, it's better to walk here.
The descent from Jungen to St. Niklaus has some tight hairpin bends in the upper section, otherwise moderately difficult.
Descent from Grächen to Stalden: steep hairpin bends, technically rather difficult.
Descent from Gibidumpass to Visp, easy and flowing.
Sufficient time should be planned for the entire tour. The post bus from Visp to Moosalp alone takes 50 minutes.
With breaks and waiting times, it easily takes 8.5 hours, although I cycled up to Grächen at St. Niklaus.

One of the most beautiful tours in central Valais - the best single trails and technically demanding enduro descents - what more could you want... A highlight is the descent from Jungen to St. Niklaus!

tour is absolutely top. steep & dry!

the bike ticket for stalden-gspon is a bit expensive (CHF 12.-) but worth every penny.
