Zunig-Alm
Description
The tour starts in Matrei in East Tyrol. At first, the route follows paved roads, then gravel paths, climbing steadily at a moderate to gentle gradient through partly forested terrain to the Zunig-Alm, a climb of about 900 meters in elevation. Along the way, there are frequent opportunities to enjoy panoramic views, as windthrow has destroyed large sections of the forest in recent years. At the top, near the Zunig-Alm, the view extends toward the Grossglockner, the Kals-Matreier-Törl-Haus, and the Hohe Tauern National Park; you can also stop for a break at the hut. The descent begins on a classic singletrack through the forest. With fine, gravelly loose stone and a few root sections, the trail is consistently rated S2, with occasional S3 sections depending on weather conditions, as it descends steadily toward the valley. As a loop, the route leads through the hamlet of Bichl and along the Isel River back to the starting point.
Note: The route is located on Austrian territory and leads over routes that are not approved for mountain bikers. Riding this route on a mountain bike is the responsibility of each individual, in full awareness of the legal situation.
