Monte Glazzat

Monte Glazzat

Monte Glazzat near Sella Cereschiatis at the end of the Val Aupa valley offers a varied, historic and technically challenging tour in the heart of Friuli.

Description

The starting point of the tour is Studena Alta at the Trattoria Settepicche. Alternatively, the tour could also be started in Pontebba, but in this case the ascent via the military road to the trattoria takes the same route as the later return journey, as there is no trail connection in this section.

The ascent is initially entirely on asphalt up to Sella Cereschiatis. On the way, you pass several well-preserved bunkers of the Vallo Alpino - silent witnesses of days gone by. Then turn right onto the access road in the direction of Malga Glazzat or Monte Glazzat.

The remaining metres in altitude are spread over a variety of asphalt, concrete and short gravel sections. A short intermediate descent provides some relief. As the altitude increases, the panorama opens up and offers impressive views of Monte Malurch and the Julian and Carnic Alps.

The Malga Glazzat itself is gently nestled in the landscape. It is managed from June to September - there is simple catering and private rooms. This is also where the descent begins.

First, you roll downhill in a relaxed manner over a wide grassy ridge. This section is technically easy (S1), with a few more challenging sections (S2). The trail then leads into wooded terrain, where the difficulty levels off at S2.

Past the Glazzat cheese factory, you finally reach an old mule track, also part of the Vallo Alpino defense network. The historic path winds its way downhill in a classic zigzag pattern. Technically, it is mostly easy (S1), but occasionally more challenging due to washed-out passages (up to S3). The wide panoramic views of the valley accompany this last section and make the return trip particularly atmospheric. At the end, the route comes full circle - the loop ends again at the Trattoria Settepicche in Studena Alta.

Ascent already quite steep, at the top the view gets better and better and at the end on the grassy hump follow the signs to Belvedere, great panorama.
The descent is easy and the first two parts that cross the ascent are easy and rather naja, the last part is more technical, exposed in places, many loose large stones and rather S2 with S3 places, especially then the last 100 hm, currently here also two tree obstacles. Nice short tour :-)
