Clap Forat

Clap Forat

The Clap Forat in the Channel Valley, at just under 1600 meters above sea level, was a heavily contested mountain peak during the First World War, although the last fragments of the paths have since been transformed into excellent trails.

Description

The starting point of this lonely and unknown tour in the canal valley is Chiusaforte. From here, you pedal along the former 19th century railroad line towards Pontebba. In Dogna, where the Val Dogna begins, you leave the cycle path at the former railroad station via a concrete staircase. Once at the bottom, the route is extremely steep up to the small village of Chiout Pupin. Here, at just under 700 meters above sea level, you can replenish your water reserves before taking the old Alpini path towards the summit. This is a rewarding end point of this tour up to around 1000 meters above sea level to the viewpoint in the canal valley. It is possible to carry the bike further, but there are some exposed and unrideable sections. All in all, it doesn't make sense to reach the summit of Clap Forat at 1560 meters above sea level, but it's definitely worth it for an adventure.

At the viewpoint, turn around and take the ascent variant. On difficulty level S2, in places S3, the route takes you on hairpin bends and partly exposed sections, even over a paved metal ramp, straight down towards Coronis. The downhill over the villages takes place with a few hairpin bends on difficulty levels S2 to S3 on an old feeder road, some of which is concreted over, which increases the fun factor even further. Finally, you rejoin the railroad line, which you ride comfortably at a constant gradient past countless lost places back to Chiusaforte, where the special old railroad station has been restored and offers culinary delights from the region. All in all, an adventurous tour that impresses with its high solitude factor and historical background. Especially recommended in spring or fall when there is less vegetation.

very nice little bike-mountaineering tour, thank you very much for this discovery! You can also start directly in Dogna and don't have to come from Chiusaforte via the cycle path as described here...
The tour can be easily combined with the Cuel Tarond Trail.
