Forte del Monte Festa

Fortino del Monte Festa

Those who set their sights on Monte Festa with the huge Forte del Monte Festa will travel to one of the most important military installations in the entire Canal Valley from the First World War. You can enjoy a fantastic ascent as well as a very challenging descent in places with a view of Lago di Cavazzo.

Description

The tour starts in the picturesque town of Bordano and follows the famous Giro d'Italia stage on asphalt towards Lago di Cavazzo. At the saddle, you take a left turn and leave the asphalt road to switch to the challenging uphill to Monte Festa. An impressive military road with hairpin bends winds its way up to the highest point of the tour at around 1055 meters above sea level. This ascent can be quite demanding, as the road is uneven in places due to weather influences and erosion. Nevertheless, the ascent remains impressive throughout with its epic character and the historic backdrop at the finish.

The ascent allows you to pedal almost continuously. Only the last few meters to the summit require the bike to be carried or pushed to reach the highest point of the facility via a staircase. At the top, a breathtaking panorama opens up over the entire Canal Valley and Tolmezzo.

The descent begins relatively easily as far as the old barracks. However, the technical challenge then increases: the shortcuts along the military road vary between difficulty levels S2 and S4. This level continues over the next sections with hairpin bends, steep steps and root passages. In the middle section, you reach a viewpoint before the trail becomes a little more flowy and has a difficulty level of S2 to S3. The difficulty then decreases towards Lago di Cavazzo or Interneppo and you almost surf into the urban area. A short intermediate climb follows before the last section of the trail leads back to the starting point on an old mule track.

Overall, this tour offers a fascinating mix of historical and sporting interest, which can be adapted according to technical ability by using the cut-offs or riding the entire military road. It is ideal to undertake this tour in spring or fall when the visibility is good and the vegetation is low.
