Monte Cjampon

Monte Cjampon

Monte Cjampon near Gemona del Friuli is one of the most varied, extreme and bizarre tours in the region and should only be tackled by mountain bikers with alpine experience and a head for heights.

Description

The tour starts at the Caserma Capitano Manlio Feruglio near Venzone. From here, the route follows the disused railroad line to Molino. Then the monotonous and long uphill to Malga Cuarnan and Monte Cuarnan begins. Countless hairpin bends, initially with quite pleasant views, later steadily uphill on asphalt in the jungle-like forest. A never-ending road leads to Malga Cuarnan. A beautifully situated mountain pasture at just under 1100 meters above sea level. From here, the pedaling is over and the bike is shouldered. After a few meters you reach the Sella Foredör and begin to carry the bike up a serpentine path. Up to around 1200 meters above sea level, there are no real obstacles to overcome. Then things change abruptly. The Passo della Signorina in particular is secured by ropes and extremely dangerous. A misstep on the uphill would have fatal consequences here. There are also countless climbing passages and key uphill sections to conquer, which means that the bike has to be repeatedly transferred from the shoulder to the hand and back again. Ideally, the tour should be completed in pairs, with one person handing the bike to the other to help. The situation only eases in the last 100 meters of altitude and you reach Monte Cjampon. A breathtaking panoramic summit, where you can see Trieste, Jesolo, Lignano and the entire Tagliamento to the south and the Carnic Alps to the main Alpine ridge to the glacier area of the Hohe Tauern to the north.

The descent also begins at the top and is only rideable in places. The first 50 meters or so along the ridge are ideal for pushing off before you reach a singletrail with a difficulty of S3 to S4 at Pale dai Russeis. The difficulty decreases more and more and changes to S2 to S3, leading to the Località Stavoli Scric. A beautifully situated mountain pasture with a view towards the Tagliamento and Rivoli Bianchi. The singletrail continues in this manner and rides down to Forcella di Ledis. At Forcella di Ledis, you reach a bizarre world. Towards Rivoli Bianchi, the route alternates between an old mule track and a "big mountain style" descent on open gravel surfaces. In the Rivoli Bianchi area near the Strada di Ledis, you take the last trail section and surf back to the starting point on difficulty levels S0 to S1.

Note: Please note once again the extreme risk of falling and the extreme uphill in the carrying area. This should only be undertaken by experienced mountain climbers with alpine biking experience. Otherwise, it is advisable to avoid the tour.
