Monte San Simeone - Westside

Monte San Simeone

The Monte San Simeone, with its epic ascent over the countless hairpin bends in the southern section, offers a challenging and alpine trail descent towards Lago di Cavazzo.

Description

The tour begins in the picturesque village of Bordano, located near the Tagliamento river. From the starting point, the route initially rides steadily uphill on asphalt until you reach the junction for Monte Festa or Monte San Simeone. Here you turn right onto the military road towards Monte San Simeone. This road is an impressive example of Italian engineering from the First World War and winds its way up the southern slope with numerous hairpin bends. The views from the bends are spectacular; on a clear day, you can see across the Tagliamento as far as the foothills of the Alps and Trieste.

In the upper section, you reach a plateau that is popular with paragliders. Here the surface changes to gravel before the road finally ends in a wooded area and the bike has to be carried. The ascent continues from around 1250 m above sea level up to 1500 m above sea level. Once you reach the summit, the views are breathtaking. The view of the confluence of the Rio Fella and Tagliamento and Monte Amariana in the background is particularly impressive.

The descent begins at the summit and initially leads back to the gravel road, with sections of difficulty levels S2 and S3. The visibility of the trail can vary depending on the vegetation. You then return to the plateau, but this time you take path 838a in the direction of Monte Festa. This very alpine and partially exposed Mulattiera trail is classified as difficulty level S3. Maximum bike control is required, especially in the exposed passages, as the terrain is steep there.

After some spectacular views of Lago di Cavazzo, you reach the military road towards Monte Festa. The descent remains technically challenging and finally leads into the urban area of Interneppo. A short uphill is still to come before you ride back to Bordano on the last Mulattiera path.

Overall, this tour in the Kanaltal/Friaul valley is a magnificent and somewhat hidden challenge that is also doable on an e-bike, provided you skip the summit of San Simeone. However, the alpine nature of the route means that it can be affected by heavy rain and storms, which requires extra caution.
