Passo Maleet
Description
The mountain bike tour starts in the small village of Carnia and first rides past old barracks on the historic military road from the Second World War. This route rides to Stavoli Tugliezzo at 503 meters above sea level. Here, you turn right and continue on asphalt and concrete before the road turns to gravel and rides in serpentines to the Ricovero Elio Franz refuge at 1034 meters above sea level. E-bikers can easily manage the trail from the refuge, while biobikers shoulder their bikes and carry the Sentiero 701, the Traversata Prealpi Giulie, up to Passo Maleet at just under 1600 meters above sea level.
The ascent already reveals that the upper part of the route will be challenging on the descent. Once you reach Passo Maleet, you have a clear view of Monte Plauris and the Julian and Carnic Alps. The descent begins immediately with a difficulty of S3 and S4, which requires full attention and technical precision. On extremely loose limestone, combined with hairpin bends and steep gradients, you descend 300 meters in altitude. The continuing descent runs at an S2 level, past the refuge and repeatedly crosses the ascent path until it reaches the military road.
The route offers a challenging and rewarding descent on a partially well-preserved mule track. After meeting the asphalt road again at an altitude of around 350 meters, it rides back to the starting point.
