Jof di Ungarina

Jof di Ungarina

The top class around Venzone can be reached with the descent from the Jof di Ungarina summit via Malga Ungarina. The route is aimed at mountain bikers who like alpine trails and exposed passages, which also include the occasional pushing and carrying section.

Description

The start is in Venzone. The historic town center with its narrow streets and lovingly restored buildings is quickly left behind - after a few metres of rolling in, the steady climb begins. With moderate to medium gradients, the route rides mostly on asphalt uphill to Malga Ungarina. Here you can already enjoy impressive views over the Friuli basin and the surrounding mountains.

From Malga Ungarina, the mountain bike is shouldered. A wartime path from the First World War, initially difficult to follow but later easily recognizable, winds its way up the slope to the Cresta Jôf di Ungarina. The scenery is impressive: the view extends far beyond the Tagliamento to the Karawanken and Julian Alps. The bike is deposited on the ridge - from here, the short walk (approx. 10 minutes) to the highest point of the tour is definitely worthwhile.

The summit rewards you with a panorama that is hard to beat: the field of vision stretches from the Hohe Tauern in the north to the Mediterranean in the south. The multitude of visible peaks is almost impossible to list - a place that makes you pause for thought.

After returning to the bike depot, the technically challenging descent begins. An adventurous military trail - also from the First World War - winds its way downhill in tight hairpin bends and sometimes very steep passages (S3) towards Malga Confin. Safe riding technique, good line choice and hairpin bend skills are absolutely essential here.

From Malga Confin, there is a short transfer back to Malga Ungarina. The Sentiero 705 is then tackled - a wonderfully laid out mule track with difficulty levels between S1 and S3. A short counter-climb of around 50 meters in altitude and a few stream crossings (with carrying passages) provide variety.

Further on, the trail runs over gravel with occasional exposed sections that challenge even experienced enduro riders. The trail becomes increasingly flowy in the lower section, but still requires full concentration due to the overall length of the tour.

After almost 1600 Elevation loss, you finally reach the village of Venzone again. The tour ends at the turquoise waters of Torrente Venzonassa - a perfect place to end the day with a well-earned dinner.

Note: This tour rides through alpine terrain and requires surefootedness, alpine experience and good weather. In summer, spring clouds and thunderstorms can form quickly in the area around Venzone - stable weather conditions are therefore a prerequisite for the tour.

All in all a really great and rewarding tour! :-)

For the ascent to Jof Ungarina you can choose between CAI 702 from Malga Ungarina (described here as an ascent) and CAI 702a from Malga Confin (described here as a descent, definitely take it as a descent!).
The first third of CAI 702 is particularly difficult with the bike on your back, as it is very steep, with large steps and partly trampled by cows... The CAI 702a from Malga Confin is the longer but flatter and slightly better-graded trail, so in my experience it is also better and less strenuous for carrying/pushing uphill.
