Monte Flagel

Monte Flagel

The enduro tour in the Italian Prealps near Gemona del Friuli on Monte Flagel/Monte Flagjel via Malga Cuar offers fantastic uphill and downhill highlights with a challenging trail descent.

Description

The mountain bike tour starts in the small village of Avasinis, idyllically situated just below Lago di Cavazzo. From the starting point, you only follow the main road for a short distance before turning off onto the old, historic road and tackling the epic serpentines towards Stavoli Monte Cuar.

The route initially rides along an old military road, which has now mutated into a trail and, despite the slight incline, offers a challenging route due to loose gravel and roots. The route continues steadily uphill towards Cuel di Forcja, changing from asphalt to gravel shortly before the fork. Stay on the military road and follow it to Malga Cuar.

At Malga Cuar, the bike is pushed and carried over the saddle below Cuel dai Poz towards Monte Flagel/Monte Flagjel. This section is on the CAI 815, a former military trail that has eroded and broken off in some places, so caution is advised.

On reaching the summit (just under 1500 meters above sea level), you can enjoy a magnificent panorama of the foothills of the Alps. The descent begins here and initially leads down to Malga Cuar on technically challenging sections with difficulty levels between S2 and S4. The calcareous karst subsoil requires special attention, as carelessness can quickly lead to a fall.

Past Malga Cuar, the route leads through the Torrente Leale valley on more moderate difficulty levels S1 and S2, which feels like a ride through the jungle until you reach the forest road again. The tour then crosses the mountain ridge past Stavoli Grignes and follows historic paths back to the starting point.

The last part of the route offers another trail spectacle on difficulty levels S2 and S3 on the so-called Avaginaz Enduro Trail, which becomes particularly challenging in damp and wet conditions.

As far as e-bike suitability is concerned: if you finish the tour at Malga Cuar, you can ideally complete it on an e-bike. Overall, this tour is a varied and demanding undertaking that offers both scenic beauty and technical challenges and is therefore highly recommended for experienced mountain bikers.
