Casera Lovinzola

Ricovero Casera Lovinzola di Sopra

The circular route from Villa Santina along old military roads and mule tracks up to the northern slopes of Monte Verzegnis is one of the most impressive and trail-heavy descents in the Tolmezzo region.

Description

The starting point of the tour is Villa Santina, just west of Tolmezzo. The route initially follows the main road briefly, then continues on side roads towards Socchieve and finally to Preone. Here you pedal steadily uphill on asphalt, past numerous military buildings from the past, which still stand impressively and sometimes fearsomely enthroned on the mountain ridges.

The route becomes quieter and more scenic in Vall Preone, even if the road there has medium to steep gradients. After the hamlet of Casali Chiampon, you roll downhill for a while before turning left on the high plateau. Now follows a steep uphill on loose gravel and partly concreted ramps up to Forchia Rizzat.

From Forchia Rizzat, pushing is the order of the day: the old mule track stretches laboriously but impressively up to the ridge - where the path forks towards Monte Cromolina. From here, a panoramic trail in a class of its own begins. The view is simply breathtaking, and the narrow mule track rides up to the alpine pasture buildings of Ricovero Casera Lovinzola di Sopra. This section can mostly be ridden smoothly at difficulty level S1.

After this, the trail becomes more varied: from S1 to S3, everything is represented on the further course. The trail rides steadily downhill on Sentiero 806. There are some exposed sections to master, especially in the middle section. In the lower section, the route is heavily washed out in places due to erosion and tracks left by motorcyclists, which requires additional attention.

If you still have reserves, you can make a detour to the Cascata Plera waterfall at Rio Plera - a worthwhile stopover. The route then winds its way past further military installations back to the bridge over the Tagliamento. The last few meters are finally pedalled back to the starting point in Villa Santina.

Note: The route is particularly suitable for tours in the summer months, as most of the ascent is in the shade and on north-facing slopes. It can be slippery in the fall due to damp leaves and wet conditions. Caution is also advised in spring - the snow conditions at higher altitudes should not be underestimated.

We rode this trail on August 1, 2026, on our e-mountain bikes. The climb is rideable all the way through, except for a few meters. The ride along the slope is relatively easy, as long as you don’t mind the exposed sections. The descent from the alpine pasture is very varied, ranging from very technical to flowy. The middle section is very steep, with lots of leaves and slippery spots. It’s also exposed, so you’ll have to take a deep breath if you want to ride the whole thing! After this section, we changed our route and turned right, riding down beautiful natural trails and later on trails shaped by locals all the way to the waterfall—which, in our case, had no water (since it was too dry). A very nice ride, almost entirely through the forest, which is a huge advantage in the heat.
