Monte San Simeone - Diretissima
Description
The route starts in the small village of Bordano near Tagliamento. Passing through the village, the route briefly follows Viale Udine and then heads steadily uphill on the right along a military road from the First World War. An unbelievable structure that was once built here still impresses today with its excellent condition. On asphalt and countless hairpin bends, the ascent to the top of the hill is relaxed and offers breathtaking views of the foothills of the Alps and the Adriatic Sea. When the thermals are good, countless paragliders also take off here. The route continues on gravel through woodland and then pushes or carries you to the summit. Here, the Tagliamento, Monte Amariana and the Fiume Fella are literally at your feet. There are also breathtaking views down to the Austrian/Italian border and, on a clear day, even as far as the main Alpine ridge.
The downhill begins at the summit. A little difficult to find at first, there is not much time to warm up. On difficulty levels S2 to S3, you descend through the forest. The transfer past the Chiesa San Simeone is then relatively flowy before you finally hit the trail cut-offs of the military road. Difficulty levels S2 to S3 and key sections at S4 level are the order of the day here. The entire trail descends in this manner. Extremely steep, exposed in places and without a second to release the brakes, the hard-won meters of altitude difference are spiralled downhill. Only in the Stavoli Vieres area does the trail become a little easier and then leads back to Bordano.
All in all, a very interesting, varied and epic tour, but one that should not necessarily be tackled in midsummer. Make sure you have enough water reserves with you, as the entire route is extremely dry. You should also pay attention to the vegetation. While there is hardly any to be found in spring and fall, you can expect extremely thick thorny vegetation in summer.
