Monte Cuarnan - Südabfahrt
Description
The route starts in the small town of Gemona del Friuli. From here, you wind your way up what feels like countless serpentines with a slight incline on asphalt to Plans di Cuarnan a Bas. In parts, the ascent feels like a jungle in summer. Heavy vegetation and high temperatures add the finishing touches. From Plans di Cuarnan a Bas, the route continues on gravel to Ôrs di Cuarnan. Here on this plateau you can see as far as the Mediterranean in good weather and low humidity. This area is also used as a take-off point for paragliders. The last few meters to the summit are covered by pushing or carrying. Once you reach the summit (1370 meters above sea level), a chapel is waiting for you to take a break and enjoy the magnificent view. Countless mountain peaks and the Tagliamento lie at your feet and provide interesting insights into the foothills of the Alps.
The trail that takes you back down into the valley is just as interesting. At the beginning, the trail follows the ascent track steadily downhill to the paragliding launch site. Here, the difficulty level of the trail is S1 to S2 in places, but when wet, the upper section becomes a pure slide, similar to soft soap. The route continues via Rivis di Palis, which is a little rocky at first but becomes easier after the traverse and is increasingly reminiscent of a jungle. The lower section is relatively densely overgrown, especially in the summer months. This phenomenon does not occur in spring and fall and it is a real adventure to descend the paths to the valley floor. Once at the bottom, you pedal back to Gemona del Friuli on a leisurely side road.

+ before it gets tough, there is good food in the Malga Quarnan (not a spectacular view, but everything is cooked on site). The summit is magnificent, 360° panorama. [The "Sornico DH" up to the "Cuarnan connector" is pure pleasure.
- The ascent, the 30 asphalt hairpin bends on a moderate gradient, that takes mental strength. The section from the paraglider launch site to the summit chapel is uphill: push/carry, downhill: blocked S2. The hiking trail to the "Sornico DH" trailhead is first S2, then it becomes exposed S3-S4, sometimes unrideable. "Sornico DH" from the blue "Cuarnan connector" is unkempt, hardly used except by wild boars - S2.
Conclusion: never again.
The "Sornico DH" from the blue "Cuarnan connector" was very good for us (2.5.2025) and overall I liked the tour as a loop with the summit. However, the sliding descent (approx. 150 - 200 hm, as you say "exposed S3-S4, partly impassable") below the paraglider launch site on the south side is a downer.
