Piz Lat

Piz Lat (Nauders)

The Piz Lat in the Sesvenna group was heavily fortified during the Second World War, resulting in perfect trail conditions with a high alpine flair today.

Description

The tour starts in Nauders, Austria. From here, follow the official cycle route towards the state border between Italy and Austria. Shortly below Plamort, turn right onto the military road or the Ochsenwald - Kopferbrücke uphill. Initially on asphalt, later on gravel, you pedal through beautiful forests to the Rescher Alm. Before the Rescher Alm, a cart path leads through larch forests, which becomes increasingly rough and impassable.

Finally, you reach a mule track of the Vallo Alpino, which has been perfectly integrated into the terrain. Outside the tree line, it rides steadily uphill in long serpentines until you reach the summit of Piz Lat at over 2,800 meters above sea level. The views are breathtaking, especially to the west and north, where the steeply sloping terrain extends into the Inn Valley and is almost impossible to describe.

The descent follows the ascent route. The trail has a difficulty of S2, with key sections in the hairpin bends on loose gravel that reach S3 in places. The trail is very flowy and pleasant to ride in between, but requires caution, especially in the dry upper section. With an impressive view of Lake Reschen and the surrounding mountains, the trail continues steadily downhill. Finally, you come to a cross-country trail that leads to the bunkers in the 3-country corner.

Past the bunkers, the route continues towards Schwarzer See lake. The idyllically situated moorland lake is surrounded by a relatively selective root trail passage, which has some striking key sections. After this challenge, you reach the official bike park section at Kleinmutzkopf and finally roll back to Nauders via the Family Trail.

Note: This tour is one of the best in the region and the entire Vinschgau Valley in terms of accessibility, trail yield and views. For bikers who have a solid uphill technique and are prepared to push some sections, the tour is easily doable on an e-bike.

Note: The route is located on Austrian territory and leads over routes that are not approved for mountain bikers. Riding this route on a mountain bike is the responsibility of each individual, in full awareness of the legal situation.

Unfortunately there is a no biking sign on the cart track before the Rescheralm.
