Sella Canton

Sella Canton

The somewhat unknown Sella Canton saddle near Tarvisio shows that former military trails have since been transformed into interesting trail descents.

Description

The tour starts in the border town of Tarvisio in the so-called border triangle of Italy/Slovenia/Austria. From here, the route climbs steadily northwards with varying gradients. You steadily gain altitude on gravel paths and pass Monte Nero before finally reaching Sella Canton (1413 meters above sea level) after an altitude difference of around 730 meters. The pass itself is inconspicuous, with only a bell to commemorate the soldiers who fell here during the First World War and shaped the history of this region.

A trail then leads downhill to the west. On an easy section between S1 and S2, you wind your way down the typical Mulattiera path until you reach the old military road of the Vallo Alpino at the Bartolo river. If you like discovering lost places, you can cycle a few meters north here to explore the abandoned military installations of the Vallo Alpino (don't forget your flashlight!). You then follow the valley along the river until you reach the Alpe Adria cycle path, which takes you back to Tarvisio and completes the loop.

A worthwhile tour overall, which is well suited as a half-day tour and offers the opportunity to end the day relaxing in Tarvisio.
