Cima Cavallar

Cima Cavallar

The Cima Cavallar mountain ridge up to Monte Forno has been heavily fortified due to its proximity to the border and now offers interesting infrastructure and trail options in the border triangle of Slovenia, Italy and Austria.

Description

The tour starts a little east of Tarvisio near Villabassa. From here, an old military road rides steadily uphill with a steady gradient and numerous lost places. The area between Cima Ruter and Cima Cavallar offers impressive panoramic views of the Julian Alps and the Triglav. On this section, you also reach the highest point of the tour at the bunker facilities. Shortly afterwards, turn right at the Madonna della Neve and use the Mulattieraweg as a descent route.

The descent is relaxed and on a wide path, with a difficulty of S1 to S2, down the mountain ridge towards Slovenia to Rateče. Here you briefly come across a forest road before taking the last section to the village. After crossing Rateče, you cycle around the nearby biotope and finally reach the disused railroad line. From here, it's a relaxed ride back to the starting point to complete the loop.
