Jof di Miezegnot

Jof di Miezegnot (Malborgether Mittagskofel)

The Jof di Miezegnot (Mittagskofel) is located near Valbruna and was heavily fortified up to the summit during the First World War and up to the Sella Somdogna saddle during the Second World War - making it a varied and sometimes technical trail descent today.

Description

The tour starts a little behind Valbruna near Schwarzbrunn. The area originally belonged to the Austrian Empire before the First World War, which is why place names with German roots keep cropping up. From here, the route rides steadily southwards on asphalt through the Val Saisera, along the massive northern slopes below the Cima di Terrarossa. Shortly afterwards, you pass the huge military area of a former Polveriera and follow an old military road up to the Rifugio Fratelli Grego. After a short gravel descent, the last rideable ascent to the Sella Somdogna saddle begins.

From the saddle, you can only continue by pushing or carrying, using the former Alpini trail to reach the old ruins at around 1900 meters above sea level. A few meters are still rideable, but the path becomes increasingly exposed and difficult, so that the summit can only be reached on foot. Once at the top, there is a breathtaking viewpoint from which you can see striking mountain ridges, peaks and mountain formations.

The descent begins on a technically challenging trail with difficulty levels S2 to S3, past former military ruins. On the CAI 607, the trail winds its way on typical limestone through Swiss stone pine forests back to the Sella Somdogna saddle. This is followed by the classic transfer section back to Rifugio Fratelli Grego, before descending directly to Polveriera or the military area via a steep direttissima trail. This section is very technical and has high steps, which is why caution is advised here. After the Polveriera, there is a mixture of side roads, trail sections and forest paths that lead back to the starting point.

Note: If you keep your eyes open, you will discover numerous military installations from the First and Second World Wars along the route, which are very interesting and worth seeing. It should also be noted that the uphill via the Salita allo Jof di Miezegnot, i.e. coming from the north, contains a very difficult passage, some of which involves climbing. Therefore, the ascent variant from the south offers the best opportunity to conquer the mountain sensibly by bike.

Swiss stone pine forests? I haven't seen a single stone pine there...wouldn't be typical for the area either. They are usually red pines, maybe a few black pines.
