Bütschelegg

The Belpberg between Thun and Bern separates the Aare and Gürbe valleys and is dotted with many attractive bike trails. In combination with the Bütschelegg on the Längenberg, this makes for a wonderful circular tour in the south of Bern.

Description

From Belp, the village of Kehrsatz is quickly reached via Belpmoos, after which the tour first heads south along Längenberg. You then climb up the mountain road to Kühlewil and follow the country road to Niedermuhlern. The ascent to Bütschelegg is next. This inconspicuous hill offers an excellent inn and a no less attractive panorama of the Bernese Alps. The descent to Toffen follows, consisting of forest roads and individual single trails. In Toffen, you cross the Gürbetal valley and climb up to the Belpberg opposite, past the Chramburg ruins. The highest point is reached at the Chutze inn, after which you ride downhill in a northerly direction back to Belp.

After Kehrsatz I took the hiking trail to Kühlewil - steep but avoids a bit of the main road. I also found the descent good/unspectacular - absolutely rideable with 27.5" 😉

The route from Kehrsatz to Niedermuhlern is mostly along main and side roads and is therefore somewhat monotonous. Only a small part of it is unpaved and rides through forest and fields. I therefore recommend taking the Gürbetaler Höhenweg from Kehrsatz towards Niedermuhlern, which offers beautiful views of Lake Thun and the mountain panorama even before you reach Bütschelegg. Via this path, the first part towards Bütschelegg is not so steep, but varied. The descent towards Toffen in the lower section is rather boring and along forest roads. The climbs in the direction of Belpberg are sometimes poisonous, the descent good but unspectacular (no more washed-out steps, as described above). The ride through Belp should be corrected... It is a nervous back-and-forth through the neighborhood.

Very nice tour. Everything is easy to manage and the view from Bütschelegg is first class. The descent to Toffen is a mix of fun single trails and forest tracks. The ascent to Belpberg is rather steep in places. The descent is super flowy in the first part, but then changes into washed-out steps that were impossible to master with my 27.5". I recommend an alternative descent.
