Col Fromage Supertour

Mont Brunet (Col Fromage)

The Col Fromage is one of the hottest MTB tips in the Queyras. In this version, it is part of a superlative trail circuit including a descent into the Gorges du Guil.

Description

The starting point of the route is Château-Queyras. It is advisable to take a shuttle for the first, long ascent up to the parking lot at Sommet Bucher. The long and somewhat barren gravel road at the start is not very attractive. However, right after the Sommet-Bucher, the going gets tough. You cross the north side on trails and gravel road until you finally turn into a trail up the mountain. Mountain bikers without a motor push up around 150 meters here. With an e-MTB, you can switch to a steep quad track that is reasonably rideable. The steepest part is soon over, where the super trail over to Col Fromage begins. A world-class high-altitude trail! It hugs the mountain flank like a brushstroke, and only on the last few meters up to Col Fromage is another short effort necessary.

From Col Fromage, the remaining 250 metres of altitude difference up to Mont Brunet continue on a trail. E-mountain bikers have a clear advantage here, as the motor makes it possible to ride on the loose, energy-sapping gravel passages. Without a motor, the mountain bike has to be pushed for long stretches because the surface is too strenuous. The summit with its small chapel offers a great panorama over the entire Queyras region and invites you to take an extended break.

The descent begins right at the summit on a very fun S2 difficulty trail and rides down to the Col de Bramousse. Now head right onto the north-facing trail and a little later turn right again over to the Col de Souillet. Now begins a 150-metre ascent back to Col Fromage, where you turn into the super trail to Le Pontet/Bramousse a little further down. The trail continues here to the valley floor in the Gorges du Guil. Take the road (uphill) back to Château-Queyras.

Note: If you want to shorten the tour, skip the loop over Mont Brunet - which would be a shame, especially because of the scenic charm and panoramic views.
