Il Pelvo – Col du Longet

Il Pelvo - Col du Longet

The round tour over the summit of the bike 3000 m peak Il Pelvo, as well as the Col du Longet crossing at 2701 meters above sea level is a  highlight in the Cottian Alps.

Description

The starting point of the tour is the parking lot above the village of Fontgillarde. From here, the route follows the pass road on asphalt to Col Angel, accompanied by great panoramic views. Approximately 50 meters below the pass, turn left and take the trail, which is partly rideable, to the Col de Chamoussiére. From here, it is only a few meters of pushing to the summit of Il Pelvo at almost 3000 meters above sea level. You will be rewarded at the border between Italy and France with an absolutely top panorama and Western Alps flair. The trail heading south along the ridge is just as great. At difficulty levels S2 to S3, the trail descends steadily to the Col de Saint-Véran. From the Col de Saint-Véran, the trail continues in a similar manner, but with a lower level of difficulty, down to the mines at almost 2200 meters above sea level. Passing the Sainte-Elisabeth chapel, the route then climbs uphill on gravel to the last crossing, the Col du Longet (2701 meters above sea level). This lies slightly below the Pic de Cháteau Renard and the Saint-Véran observatory. A detour to the summit is worthwhile from a panoramic point of view, but not a real treat in terms of the trail. From the pass, an absolutely epic nature trail with a difficulty of S1 to S2 leads back to the starting point at the parking lot on the pass road.

I rode the tour on October 18, 2025. Very nice route. I was on the e-bike and rode almost the entire ascent. I used the push-assist at some points and then carried a few more steps for the last ten meters before the summit. The descent is quite rough but perfect. On the first descent, instead of riding down to the valley floor, we turned onto the water pipe trail, which leads to the gravel road. A great alternative.

Super tour! Pass road rolls well, trail ascent then almost all pushing. On a Sunday in August with a mass hike. As an alternative, we took the S1 flowbomb directly to the chapel (Col de Chamoussiere Trail green trailforks). Ascent and descent to/from the Col de Longet as described.
