Colle di Sampeyre Diretissima

Colle di Sampeyre

The Colle di Sampeyre separates the Valle Varaita from the Valle Maira and offers a long and flowing trail descent to the north, which is characterized by an easy but long uphill.

Description

The tour starts directly in Sampeyre, not far from the local campsite. You steadily gain altitude on a well-maintained asphalt road. The view across to the Colle di Sampeyre opens up again and again, while the route runs partly through wooded areas and is pleasantly shaded.

The road follows the course of a former military connection, has now been asphalted and finally ends directly at the pass crossing, where there is also a small parking lot. The Colle di Sampeyre at around 2284 meters above sea level offers an impressive view: the two adjoining valleys stretch east-west along imposing mountain ridges - a place to pause for a moment.

From the pass, you first return along the same route for a short distance before turning off onto the Sentiero and the official U42 cycle route. This trail leads towards Monte Pui and on to Funduvet. The descent runs through typical larch forests on gravelly, in places rooty ground and corresponds to a difficulty level of around S2.

The small hamlet of Funduvet, with its traditionally roofed stone houses, makes for a charming stopover. From there, you follow other natural paths of similar difficulty back down into the valley. Along the Torrente Varaita, you finally reach the starting point in Sampeyre again.

We had the chance to shorten the ascent considerably with the very slow lift in Sampeyre. The rest of the 420m climb was relaxed and very scenic. The trail starts fluffy and always has nice sections but also longer gravel slides. The lower part is an "untidy" Roman path. Ok, but not a highlight.
