Punta della Battaglio

Punta della Battaglio

The Punta della Battaglio is located in the Valle Varaita between Casteldelfino and Pontechianale and offers mountain bikers - especially e-mountain bikers - a breathtaking trail descent as well as a historic ascent in the heart of the Western Alps.

Description

The tour starts in Torrette. From here, take the main road or pass road to Casteldelfino and then turn left immediately after the village towards Sant'Anna. The route continues along the little-used road to Bals and from here on the historic military road to Punta della Battaglio for what feels like an eternity. The road is easy to ride on a medium, sometimes steep gradient, but is somewhat eroded in places in the upper section. Overall, e-mountain bikers have a huge advantage on this tour: on the one hand, the ascent is relatively quick and the summit area is completely pedalable up to the highest point. Biobikers are in no way inferior, but have to draw on their last reserves in some areas.

On reaching the pass, the panorama is breathtaking, with Monte Viso and its almost 3,800 meters above sea level in the foreground. The descent runs at S2 to S3 level as far as Pontechianale. Here you enter the valley floor at the western end of the reservoir and take the lake path heading east right at the start. This goes up and down a little and always offers beautiful trail cuts. There are two first-class viewpoints on the lake itself, and a short detour to the small hill in Castello is highly recommended. Here you have a great view of the reservoir, the small villages and the beautiful surroundings. Castello is also a great place for a short break and a good coffee. Continue along the trail to Casteldelfino and then back to Torrette. You have now reached your starting point and completed a very impressive, albeit initially rather inconspicuous adventure tour that will leave you wanting more.

We rode the tour on 24.07.2024 from Casteldelfino. The ascent was ok and doable even without an E all the way up. Regarding the descent, I only have to add to the last comment that the upper part is now quite washed out, but still rideable. But don't expect much fun here. After that, it's just steep... There are nicer trails in Valle Varaita, but it's still a good tour, especially because of the scenery and views.

In terms of fitness level, the 3/6 tiles are right, but the off-road ascent without an e-bike is tough and steep (approx. 700 m elevation gain over 6 km). If the tour is completed in midsummer, it feels even more strenuous.
On the singletrail descent to Pontechianale, approx. 650 Elevation loss are destroyed over 2.75 km. This is a true DH route, which unfortunately offers little flow due to the fact that the surface is very dusty, even sandy, and therefore very slippery. Nevertheless, the technical challenges are manageable.
Conclusion: TOP in terms of panorama and natural feeling. Not FLOP in the overall constellation but "so so". There are better tours in the area (especially in the neighboring Valle Maira).
By the way, it's called "Punta della Battagliola" ;)
