Colle Reisassetto
Description
The starting point is the small village of San't Anna to the west of Casteldelfino. From here, the route climbs relatively steeply along a forest road to the Pian Ceiol mountain pastures. From Pian Ceiol, the bike is pushed and carried through the gorge to the valley area where the Varaita river has its source. From here you can pedal a few meters before turning right at the end of the valley onto a poorly visible path across meadows to the highest point of the tour, Colle Reisassetto (2743 meters above sea level). A fantastic panorama makes up for the effort of the ascent. The crossing is gently embedded and dotted with historic buildings that were erected here before the Second World War.
A supply road heading south was also built during this time, which today offers the perfect trail adventure. Between difficulty levels S1 and S2, occasionally S3, the route leads back to the starting point. On flow passages, hairpin bends and partially washed-out sections, you have a varied trail to master. In the intermediate section above the Grange Cheiron superiori, the trail is difficult to see for around 100 meters and the bike has to be pushed here (thorny vegetation). After that, the trail becomes pleasant to ride again and offers a wonderful descent back to the starting point on difficulty levels S1 to S2.

We did the tour on 23.07.2024. The hard-to-find path on the ascent is no longer visible - you definitely need GPS to find the ascent. About the descent: in the upper part, the path is partly heavily eroded but still easy to ride, further down, at approx. 2250 m, the trail is already quite overgrown from the fork in the path. From the point described, from which you have to push, there was actually no path to be found, which is why we went back to the fork and took the alternative trail down into the valley. However, the lower part was no longer worthwhile. Perhaps the descent will be a little better in the fall when the vegetation is not as thick as it is at the moment.
Compared to the very strenuous ascent with a lot of carrying, we didn't find the descent as rewarding. There are definitely more beautiful ones in Valle Varaita. But everyone has to decide for themselves...
