Malga Lodin

On the border between Austria and Italy in the heart of the Carnic Alps lies Malga Lodin alta, which offers a scenic, interesting and historic ascent and descent.

Description

The tour starts in Paularo. The beautifully situated village in the middle of the Carnic Alps is quickly left behind as soon as you start pedaling steadily uphill on the asphalt road heading north near the Italian-Austrian border. Several military installations of the Vallo Alpino are already visible on the ascent, as a pronounced fortification belt developed here in the 1930s and 1940s. The ascent is moderate to moderately steep until you finally reach the Passo del Cason.

At the pass, turn left onto a well-maintained gravel road that rides on a mostly paved surface to Malga Lodin Alta. The mountain pasture is gently nestled in the landscape typical of the Carnic Alps, surrounded by mighty mountain groups and a small, idyllic mountain pond.

This is where the descent begins. On the Sentiero 457, the route is very flowy on difficulty levels S1 to S2 back to the Passo del Cason. Then follow the asphalt road again briefly before changing to Sentiero CAI 442. This winds its way adventurously downhill through a narrow gorge and integrates several impressive engineering structures. From above, the gorge seems barely rideable, but the trail is a pleasant surprise. It continues downhill at difficulty levels S1 to S2, whereby individual exposed passages should be ridden with appropriate caution.

Following this route, you follow the course of the Torrente Chiarso southwards until you finally reach Paularo again and complete this varied circular tour.
