Matadown Supertrail

Matajur

The historic peak of Matajur in the Julian Alps offers a breathtaking trail descent of over twelve kilometers along the southern ridge, covering all facets of mountain biking.

Description

The route leads to the small village of San Pietro al Natisone. From here, the route winds steadily uphill towards Savogna on a small main road on asphalt. The route then continues (also on asphalt) through typical Italian villages to the Rifugio Alpino Guglielmo Pelizzo (1325 meters above sea level). Up to here, the ascent is on asphalt and is paired with great views of the Italian Alps, close to the Slovenian border. From the Rifugio, the last 300 vertical meters to the summit are on trail. With the biobike you can pedal in parts, then push again, with the e-mountainbike most of the route can be ridden. Once you reach the summit of Matajur, you can see some relics from the dark past of the First World War. Trenches, historic paths and plateaus for gun turrets are evidence of a not-so-peaceful time. In terms of views, the mountain is at the highest level and offers views as far as Slovenia in the Triglav National Park and south to the Mediterranean Sea.

The descent, known as the "Matadown", is in a class of its own. Over twelve kilometers along the southern ridge, the trail alternates between difficulty levels S1 to S3 with intermediate uphills, jumps, berms, rock gardens and hairpin bends and covers all facets of mountain biking. An absolute trail monster that never seems to end. Even on the last few meters you dive into a small bike park, which finally ends right at the bottom of the valley. All in all, a truly gigantic tour in the foothills of the Eastern Alps. A must-do for every biker and a visual treat thanks to the fabulous landscape and idyllic villages.

Done on September 14 in damp and foggy conditions. On the last part to the chapel of Matajur I humped briefly and changed inside. The descent is technical and still has a few short climbs. With the onset of rain, the descent becomes really long and dirty. Still a great experience

As a "local", I can also recommend the uphill via Rodda Alta, Mersino. If you don't want to ride the whole trail, you can also get to the second third on this route. I do the 749 (Matadown is the name of the race) every summer. The first part is not worthwhile if it has rained a lot. Then you ride in very washed-out terrain. You can find more information on the website of the Natisone Bike Arena, https://natisonebikearena.it. There are also other trails on the website, which are well maintained.

Incredibly great tour. Good pedaling uphill. We went a little further into the valley and then up via Masseris. It was a bit flatter and easier than the track from ride. Every meter of altitude is worth it. The descent is endlessly great. Lots of flow with some technical sections. Definitely a must-do!

Really cool tour, probably one of the most flowing singletrail descents in the Alps. A must if you're out and about on a mountain bike in the region. Tip: Take the shuttle from Positive Sport (Kobarid) up to the Rifugio.
