The starting point is Rijeka, the port city in the Kvarner Bay. From here, it is a relatively quick ride away from the hustle and bustle of the city along main and secondary roads on a constant incline up to the peak of Veli Vrh (432 meters above sea level). The background to this tour is quickly explained: in the last century, the Vallo Alpino works were not only built in Italy, but also partly in neighboring countries. This mountain was also fortified as a result. Today, countless military roads run through the area, providing a good bike infrastructure. At the summit, you have a great view for the short ascent of just under 450 meters. The view towards Rijeka and the Croatian Mediterranean islands is particularly beautiful.

The descent is just as spectacular. A brick-built Alpini path leads along the ridge at difficulty levels S1 to S2. Countless paths have emerged in the meantime, just waiting to be "rolled over". The trail continues in this manner, past barracks and clearings, until it finally plunges into a deep forest at an altitude of around 250 meters above sea level. You get that jungle feeling. It is advisable to complete the tour in dry conditions, as the ground turns into a kind of soft soap when wet. The route descends to the idyllic Rječina River on hairpin bends before crossing it and rolling out through the valley to Rijeka on a side road.
