Vidalj – Mudna dol Trail

Near Obruč in the hinterland of Rijeka is a lesser-known peak, Vidalj. In combination with the Mudna dol Trail, it offers one of the best trail descents in the region.

Description

The mountain bike tour starts in the picturesque district of Trsat near Orehovica, close to the port city of Rijeka. From here, the route rides steadily uphill on asphalt roads towards Dražice as you circle Grobnik. At the foot of the mountains around Vojak and Obruč, you finally leave the asphalt and begin a varied uphill section, which includes both easy pedalable sections and steep, challenging passages.

In the upper section, shortly before the summit, the uphill changes to a single trail, which is completely rideable, especially for e-bikers. Finally, you reach the saddle that rides directly to the Hahlič hut. Here you head south towards the summit and reach the highest point of the tour at 1184 meters above sea level. The panorama from this vantage point is breathtaking and offers a sweeping view over the Mediterranean, the port of Rijeka and the islands of Krk and Cres.

The descent along the ridge is a highlight of the tour and is classified as difficulty S2. The route offers spectacular views and finally ends on a mulattiera trail that rides directly to Dražice. Passing the race track and the disused airport, the route then heads towards Hrastenice.

In Hrastenice, the next section of the descent begins on a single trail that varies between difficulty levels S2 and occasionally S3. This section rides right down to Draga. In two or three places, depending on the weather and vegetation, the bike may have to be pushed for a short time, as heavy vegetation and broken stones can make the passage difficult. Despite these minor challenges, the cycling fun remains largely untroubled and makes for an exciting finale to the tour.
