Monte Grappa Classico

Monte Grappa

Monte Grappa is one of the great singletrail classics in Italy. Located at the southern foot of the Dolomites, the tour offers not only a firework of serpentines but also historical food for thought: the region was one of the worst battlefields during the First World War.

Description

The tour begins with the long asphalt ascent up to Monte Grappa. The starting point is Semonzo, not far from Bassano del Grappa. The road winds its way up the mountain in countless serpentine bends but with a pleasant gradient. It climbs in this style up to the summit of Monte Grappa, with the occasional short descent to take a breather. The summit is impressive not only because of its panoramic views from the Dolomites to Venice and the Adriatic Sea. Today, the summit region is an oversized memorial to the countless victims who died here during the First World War. More than 12,000 Italian and over 10,000 Austrian soldiers died in military battles in this region. The paths that are now used for the descent also have a military background. On the one hand, they were used to carry supplies of food and ammunition uphill, and on the other, to carry the countless dead and wounded down to the valley.

The descent begins with a wonderful singletrail down to the small asphalt road where the rocky path along Monte Boccar begins. This trail is impressively carved into the steep terrain. Because it is quite wide, it can be easily ridden by bike. Follow this path until the famous Sentiero 152 turns off to the right. This winds its way down into the valley in countless bends. It is never steep and the bends are easy to ride. Many mountain bikers think of this trail as the famous Monte Grappa trail - even though there are many other great descents in the region. In serpentine mode, you descend far down into the valley, then the trail becomes fast, smoother and less rocky in the forest. Eventually you reach an asphalt road, later changing to a gravel road to reach the village of Crespano. A mix of country roads, gravel paths and single trails takes you up and down via Cassanego and Borso back to Semonzo.

Rode the tour today. Amazing how the area changes during the ascent. The descent is fun Sentiero 152 trail is easy to ride, but quite exposed in the upper part. Not everyone likes it. But the tour was worth it for me!

Rode this tour on 17.05.24.
But we started in Crespano del Grappa and climbed up a Mulatierra path that spits you out right at the Rifugio Ardosetta. However, the ascent is a tough one. Very gravelly and relatively steep. I agree with ride_32015. You have to do this tour. Impressive trail with great views! The trail is really fun.

A "must" if you are in the area. Outside the main season, make sure you take enough liquid with you. Many of the restaurants on the ascent are closed and there are no fountains to refill your water bottles. The Rifugio Bassana (Cima Grappa) is also closed on Mondays and Tuesdays (as of October 2023).
