3 Laghi della Val Tramontina

3 Laghi della Val Tramontina

The route around the three lakes—Lago di Tramonti, Lago di Ca Selva, and the somewhat hidden Lago di Ca Zul—offers an adventurous, at times technically challenging, and scenically stunning loop in the heart of Friuli.

Description

This mountain bike tour begins south of Lago di Tramonti near Redona. From here, the route follows a paved access road through small villages before reaching the pass at “Borgata Staligial.” There, the paved road gives way to a singletrack, which winds downhill toward the dam at Lago di Ca Selva. The difficulty on this section ranges between S1 and S2. You then pass these impressive reservoirs, framed by massive mountains. Now it’s time to turn on your lights—which are absolutely essential on this tour—and wind your way through the dark tunnel. The adventurous ride is several meters long and leads directly to the climb toward Forcella Dodesmala at 965 meters above sea level. The mountain bike is mostly pushed and carried through this section, as the rideable portion is practically zero.

From Forcella, the descent begins down to the third and final reservoir, Lago di Ca Zul. This section is technically somewhat more demanding and ranges on the difficulty scale between S2 and S3. You’ll need to navigate a few hairpin turns, and the singletrack becomes quite narrow in places, demanding the rider’s full concentration. Once you reach the last reservoir, follow the route further north along the Fiume Meduna. Here, another interesting singletrack awaits with sections ranging from S1 to S3 difficulty, as well as a few sections where you’ll need to push your bike. You then wind your way back toward Tramonti di Sotto, away from the main road and along the water, finally crossing the bridge to return to the starting point. In summary, this is an extremely impressive, varied, and adventurous ride, where working lights on your mountain bike are absolutely essential for traversing the tunnel.
