Monte Figogna

Monte Figogna (Genua)

Monte Figogna with the most important Marian shrine in Liguria "Our Lady of the Guard" and the top-class trail combination is an absolute highlight in the Genoa region.

Description

The route starts in San Biagio, at the confluence of the Torrente Secca and Torrente Polcevera rivers. From here, the route rides steadily up the slopes on well-maintained asphalt until you reach the small town of Gaiazza. From Gaiazza, a particularly historic uphill begins: on the former Percorso Verde - Ex Guidovia railroad line, the route climbs gently uphill through impressive scenery - full of tunnels, mystical, typically Italian. The route leads up to Monte Figogna, the highest point of the tour, where mighty church buildings are enthroned.

In good weather, there is a great view from here - and an equally attractive trail descent: on difficulty S2, the route descends eastwards from the summit, through wooded areas with rocky and stony ground - typically Ligurian and technically varied. In the valley, you meet the Salita alla Guardia again, via which you return to the summit to start the second descent. This leads relatively smoothly down to the panoramic road in the direction of Osteria Tucci. From there, you roll in cross-country style through partly wooded areas to the mining area, where the next trail begins.

This section is characterized by flowing passages and gigantic views - typically Mediterranean in style and flair. On the so-called Murta trail, you continue downhill at a pleasant pace. The combination of views, Mediterranean vegetation and trail quality makes this part of the tour a real highlight. You then return to the urban environment, take one last trail cut-off (difficulty S2) in the direction of Carpinello and finally roll back to the starting point on asphalt.

Conclusion: A historically influenced and scenically varied tour that scores points with numerous trail options, especially on Monte Figogna. The tour should only be ridden in dry conditions, as the ground quickly becomes slippery when wet. On public holidays and in the high season, there may be an increased number of visitors around the church grounds - it's worth starting early!
