Genua Backyard-Trails

Monte Fasce (Genua)

With Monte Fasce and Monte Ratti, this route packs two of the trail highlights in the Genoa hinterland into one great and longer MTB tour.

Description

The first stage of this tour is characterized by the panoramic asphalt ascent up to Monte Fasce. The winding mountain road slowly winds its way out of the Sturla district and into the countryside. The last few metres to the summit, where there are numerous aerial installations, are somewhat steeper and characterized by many potholes. Once you reach the top, a magnificent panoramic view of Genoa and the entire Riviera di Levante awaits you - a real highlight on a clear day.

The summit is the starting point for the first - rather short - trail descent. This trail was built by and for mountain bikers and offers a lot of riding fun. It is definitely worth including this section in the tour, even if it soon leads back onto the familiar ascent road. A little later, you reach the pass below Monte Fasce. Keep left there and climb a rough section of trail that finally leads to the ridge - the foundation for a particularly long descent: the Eremita Trail. This trail is extremely varied: from fast S1 passages to rough S3 sections, everything is represented. The trail leads deep down to the valley floor at San Desiderio, where the first stage of the tour ends.

Now it's time for the second part of the tour - with Monte Ratti as the destination. You climb uphill again, this time on a quieter asphalt road - the landscape is a little less spectacular, but still pleasant to ride. After the village of Montelungo, you immerse yourself in nature again and climb up the eastern side of Monte Ratti. This ascent requires a steep pushing passage to reach the massive fortress. The historic complex dates from around the time of the First World War. Today it is heavily overgrown, but mostly accessible - an exciting stopover with atmosphere. If you want to avoid the pushing passage, take the path past Monte Rosato and head over a short section of traverse into the descent from Monte Ratti.

On the long trail descent from Monte Ratti back to the town center, you flow down the north side of the ridge to a small chapel where you meet a road. If you are riding an e-bike with enough battery, it is worth continuing along the trail along the ridge - technically challenging but spectacular. If you prefer to conserve your energy, use the road for a short, pleasant climb to a dilapidated water tank. There you meet up with the main trail again, which now runs directly over the ridge with a fantastic view of the city center - a worthy end to a challenging tour.

Thanks for the great tour!

However, I would like to share one hack here so that others can prepare themselves mentally. The gravel road to Montelungo, from 350m above sea level, is probably not rideable by most people, probably not even with E-MTBs, as it is too steep. The subsequent trail, from 400m above sea level to Monte Ratti, is no longer available as it is overgrown. Alternatively, a "green" (according to Trailforks) trail leads off to the left about 200m later. This actual downhill trail is also not rideable uphill, as it is steep and has steps, but pushing is possible.

The route is considered suitable for E-MTBs, but from Montelungo to Monte Ratti I don't think this is the case, at least not on these trails. It would be nice to have a more "rideable" ascent.
