Description

Pegli, a western district of Genoa, has a sophisticated look: magnificent mansions line the elegant beach promenade, behind which villas nestle on the slopes of the Ligurian hills. But if you think it's all about strolling, you're wrong. Between Bric Ferra and Bric delle Monache, a few locals have created a real trail mecca - wild, creative and with great attention to detail.

Enrico Guala, Mister Enduro, trail builder and tourism developer from Finale Ligure, grew up here. Today he shows us his home trails - and they are not long in coming. After a few asphalt serpentines along the villas, the adventure begins: a jungle trail zigzags wildly through ferns, gnarled trees and small stream crossings - technical, playful, primal.

Later, the terrain opens up. We traverse the western flanks of Bric Ferra and Bric delle Monache, circle around the latter in a 180-degree loop and approach the coast again - always with a view of the city deep below us. At kilometer 5.9, Enrico leads us on a short climb to the summit of Bric delle Monache. This is where the "Antifoes" starts - a steep, rocky trail where you need to hold back on the front brake.

The climb to Bric Ferra follows, where it's worth taking a break: the view of Genoa, the Mediterranean and the surrounding hills is simply breathtaking. But now full concentration! The following "Crestino" trail runs in wide sweeps and skilfully alternates between flowing passages, loose scree and technical sections - a real all-rounder.

At kilometer 8, the idyll ends abruptly: the trail spits us out into a huge apartment complex. We wind through courtyards, carports and alleyways until we come across the "Crazy Doc" trail through a small garden gate. Another masterpiece from the local trail builders: cleverly shaped, with a love of lines and lots of fun.

The finale of the tour takes us over a hill, under which the tunnels of the highway bore through - a bizarre mixture of wild nature and urban flair. Finally, the "Crazy Doc" releases us deep under a highway bridge in the middle of Pegli. We celebrate the end of this enduro experience in style in one of the many bars on the beautiful beach promenade - with a cool drink in hand and a trail grin on our faces.
