Gamshütte

Gamshütte (Zillertal)

The Gamshütte is located just outside the mainstream trails in the Zillertal and offers a varied trail descent with some panoramic views.

Description

The tour starts in the western part of Mayrhofen. First you pedal on asphalt along the road through the Stillupklamm gorge steadily uphill towards the Schlegeis reservoir. Shortly afterwards, turn right towards Dornau and follow this route to the sports fields. There you ride a few more meters on asphalt before turning left onto gravel in the direction of Gamshütte on the official cycle route. In this way, you work your way up to the transition at 1650 meters above sea level, where the bike can only be pushed or carried.

The trail continues uphill via the Hermann-Hecht-Weg, where you can already make a note of the key points and sections that will later be used as downhill sections. The end point of the uphill is the Gamshütte, whereby the last few meters are partly provided with artificial structures. It is up to each biker to decide whether to take the bike the last few meters. Afterwards, there is a good opportunity to stop for refreshments at the hut before riding back down the Hermann-Hecht-Weg.

The trail is easy to ride overall and is in the S2 to S3 difficulty range. However, the tight switchbacks and the gentle gradient make the hairpin bends somewhat challenging and trial-heavy. Meter by meter and hairpin bend by hairpin bend, the trail descends and is strongly reminiscent of a military trail in the Dolomites or the Western Alps. The path is very well integrated into the surroundings and is partly walled, so that you ride through the woods. Some sections have been affected by windthrow, but the trees have already been removed.

Above the sports fields, you briefly rejoin the uphill route before mastering a small intermediate ascent on a perfectly laid out single trail. Here you reach a difficulty level of S1, occasionally S2, and finally reach the road that rides through the gorge towards the Schlegeis reservoir. After a few meters on asphalt, turn right again and take the last trail sections that take you directly back to the starting point.

Note: The route is located on Austrian territory and leads over routes that are not approved for mountain bikers. Riding this route on a mountain bike is the responsibility of each individual, in full awareness of the legal situation.
