Plugsberg (Mittersill)

The Pflugsberg near Mittersill above the Felbertauern pass road offers a magnificent mountain panorama and, with a clever combination, a technically varied and interesting trail descent to Mittersill.

Description

The tour starts at the swimming pool in Mittersill, which is easily accessible thanks to a train connection. From here, you cycle through the idyllic town center and follow the official Schattberg cycle path towards Pölsenalm. The start is still relaxed, but soon a cart path leads steeply uphill through the forest. The mostly meadow- and grass-covered uphill section increases the rolling resistance considerably, which requires additional effort when pedaling. Even during the ascent, you can enjoy panoramic views over the Pinzgau and the Kitzbühel Alps, which become more and more impressive as the altitude increases.

Shortly before the Pölsenalm, a large, locked gate signals the end of the cycle route, and from here, the bike is pushed. You reach the mountain ridge via a small feeder path and push the bike past "Auf der Platte" along the ridge with spectacular views of the Hohe Tauern and the glacier until you finally reach the Pflugsberg at just under 2450 meters. The last 200 meters to the Pflugsberg are partially blocked and could also be pushed in sections on the downhill, but it's up to you to decide where the uphill ends.

From the highest point of the tour, you can see the striking peaks of the Hohe Tauern, the Kitzbühel Alps, the Wilder Kaiser and the Bavarian Pre-Alps. The subsequent trail descent is almost perfect and is mostly at a level between S2 and S3, with a few challenging sections that will make bikers' hearts beat faster. The entire ridge, which served as an ascent variant, is followed on the way down to the "Auf der Platte" junction. There you turn left onto a hiking trail to the Pölsenalm, cross it and follow an idyllic forest path to the so-called Berghof. This section offers perfect trail variety and, in combination with the hairpin bends, is technically between S2 and S3.

After another transfer through the northern section of the forest, the next trail section towards Mittersill awaits. The trail continues downwards in a similar manner, becoming easier in sections and finally ending at the Kneipanlage, which is ideal for relaxing after around 1700 meters of altitude in summer.
