Gernkogel (Pinzgau)

The Gernkogel is perfectly nestled between the Hohe Tauern and the Kitzbühel Alps. It is characterized by a breathtaking panorama, as well as an incredibly harmonious and varied trail descent.

Description

The tour starts in Wald im Pinzgau, an idyllically situated village close to the Gerlos Pass and the Krimml Waterfalls, which offers the perfect starting point for a tour of superlatives. At the beginning, the trail rides on asphalt along the old Gerlos road and then up the southern slopes below the Gernkogel. The surface then changes from tarmac to gravel, and the route is relatively lengthy over the ridge towards Filzenscharte. In this way, you finally reach the Wurfgrundalm, which is idyllically situated above the valley floor and impresses with breathtaking views of the Hohe Tauern and the Großvenediger.

From here, you can ride a few more meters before pushing or carrying your bike up around 500 metres in altitude. At this point, it should be mentioned that a light e-mountainbike or an e-biker who is not afraid of the push function can also pedal in some sections. However, other passages are more difficult to master. Finally, you reach the summit at over 2,200 meters above sea level and are rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view. The entire Kitzbühel Alps, the Hohe Tauern, the Tux Alps and the Zillertal Alps are close enough to touch.

The descent runs along the ridge to the east. The level of difficulty here is S2 to S3, and there are a few hairpin bends to master (hairpin technique is an advantage). The route continues down the idyllic and epic southern slope with difficulty level S2, descending a total of over 1300 vertical meters. The trail is particularly mystical in the forest; the moss-covered forest floors make the ride extremely impressive and calming.

Shortly afterwards, you meet the old Gerlos Pass road again, ride up a few meters in altitude and finally reach the last descent, which leads you directly to the Salzach. Cycle past Camping Viktoria on the relaxed cycle path back to the starting point.
