Tauernkreuz (St. Pöltner Hütte)
Description
The starting point is the Felbertal near the Felbertauern Pass road. There are countless parking options for cars in the entrance area and you can then pedal in a relaxed manner towards Meilingeralm as far as Hintersee. From Hintersee, the route then climbs steadily up the old feeder road for the mining industry, where tungsten was mined, towards Brentling. In the area of the plateau, you cross the slope onto a somewhat inconspicuous path and from this point onwards you only have to push and carry your bike up to the St. Pöltner Hütte. A former mule track, which is in good condition, leads up to the Tauernkreuz at almost 2500 meters above sea level. The mountain panorama is magnificent, but is somewhat spoiled by the high-voltage power lines that have been erected in this area. The hut itself offers excellent food and friendly staff and is perfect for a summit snack.
The descent from the hut basically follows the ascent route. Difficulty S2 to S3, occasionally S4, is to be expected. The descent itself is magnificent and feels like half an eternity. In the intermediate section, there is a short ascent in the opposite direction before finally descending to the serpentines towards Hintersee. Once you reach Hintersee, there are a few more trail cut-offs to the end of the valley.
Note: The route is located on Austrian territory and leads over routes that are not approved for mountain bikers. Riding this route on a mountain bike is the responsibility of each individual, in full awareness of the legal situation.
