Chiesa dei Granatieri

Monte Cengio (Val di Astico)

The Chiesa dei Granatieri with the descent on Sentiero 647, in combination with the military installations from the First World War, shows once again that the Alps are bizarre, breathtaking and full of unknown trails.

Description

The starting point of this tour is the small village of Cogollo del Cengio. The ascent winds along an old military road on asphalt, gravel and then a military path towards Col Mandre. Gaps in the vegetation open up again and again and you can get an idea of the far-reaching views you will have further up. Directly at the saddle at Col Mandre (1348 meters above sea level), you then take the military road towards Chiesa dei Granatieri. You cross tunnels and the rock face in a breathtaking way. With unimaginable effort, precision and time pressure, fortifications were carved into the mountain here over 100 years ago to defend the land - today the fortifications are only used by mountain sports enthusiasts. The crossing is an unparalleled experience. Especially from the middle, the panorama is fabulous and gives you goosebumps.

On arrival at the Chiesa dei Granatieri, take Sentiero 647 as the direct route back to the starting point. With difficulty levels ranging from S2 to S3, you tackle countless hairpin bends, as well as an eternal descent and finally a flow trail back to Cogollo del Cengio. Once you reach the bottom, the route comes full circle and you have a perfect mix of uphill, panoramic high-altitude trail with alpine flair and eternal downhill with technical passages behind you.

Dear Martin, you are definitely confusing S2 to S3 on the 647 with S3 to S5 in places. I know dozens of your tours from Kanaltal to Val Stura, with very specific, correct descriptions, but unfortunately you have made a massive mistake here.
An adventure, but unfortunately 70% unrideable. SG
