Cima Vezzena - Forte Belvedere

Cima Vezzena

The historic round tour in the Seven Municipalities (Sette Comuni) from the summit of Cima Vezzena via the breathtaking Gschwendt plant is a top-class tour that should not be missed.

Description

The starting point is the village of Casotto (San Pietro). At Casotto, take the uphill section of the Strada della Cingella, a historic road along the Val Torra. Directly on the former border between the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Italy, the ascent is steep and at times impassable. The alternative on the opposite side of the valley is currently impassable due to massive storm damage from 2022 (as of summer 2022). In the area of the plateau, the route then climbs steadily uphill on forest roads and partly on historic, paved paths in a gentle landscape towards Forte Busa di Verle. The Forte Busa di Verle also dates back to the First World War and demonstrates the incredible hardships and stresses experienced by soldiers during this time. From this forte, the route continues along a military road to the highest point of the tour, Cima Vezzena. Just as heavily fortified from this period, it towers far above the Valsugana and offers an absolute dream view in all directions.

The descent runs along the ridge towards the south/west. At difficulty levels S2 to S3, there is little room for error and full concentration is required. As an alternative to this descent, you can take the trail along the east ridge, which is a little more difficult at the beginning and then becomes easier. At Forte Busa di Verle, you take a few more trail cut-offs before heading to Monterovere. At Monterovere, you then cross the biotope on the main road before there is another small climb and you finally head towards Forte Belvedere (Gschwendt factory) - an incredible fortress bar right on the edge of the high valley. It also bears witness to the terrible times of the First World War. The descent initially follows historical paths on difficulty level S1, after which it becomes increasingly difficult and is classified as S2 to S3 with a few hairpin bends and descents towards Brancafora. At Brancafora, the route then continues on a valley path, the Sentiero Rio Torto, which finally points to the home stretch and takes you comfortably to the starting point at Casotto.
